If you use a wheelchair to get around, you have undoubtedly experienced difficulty getting in and out of an automobile. Even if you can be lifted into the vehicle, leaving your wheelchair behind poses a problem once you reach your destination. If you will be using a wheelchair longterm, it makes sense to look into obtaining a wheelchair van. There are several options available. There are new vans and used vans, full size vans and minivans. They can all be very expensive. A viable alternative is to look into a wheelchair van conversion.
In a wheelchair van conversion on a minivan, structural changes are made to the vehicle whereby a retractable ramp is installed, and the floor is lowered to accommodate the extra height needed to fit the wheelchair and rider in the vehicle. There are two basic types of wheelchair van conversion for minivans, each with advantages and disadvantages. Rear-entry conversions allow the user to enter the vehicle from the back. The primary advantage here is that the ramp is accessible in any parking situation. The primary disadvantage is that you can't turn the wheelchair around inside the vehicle so you have to back the wheelchair down the ramp.
Side-entry minivan conversions are a popular way to go. They involve more structural change to the vehicle so they can cost more than their rear-entry counterparts. The main disadvantage of side-entry, besides the cost, is that it can be difficult to gain entry in parking lots where cars are parked side by side. One important advantage though is that with a side-entry wheelchair van conversion, the wheelchair user can better gain access to the driving position and drive the car themselves.
You can also get a wheelchair van conversion done on a full-size van. The inside of the van already has enough headroom to accommodate the wheelchair, so the floor does not need to be lowered. The full-size van also may be better at accommodating the wheelchair passenger as well as other passengers and cargo.
With any type of wheelchair van conversion that you choose, there will be options you can customize to fit your needs and budget. The ramp, for instance, can run automatically off the car battery with the push of a button, or you can choose to run it fully or semi-manually for a more cost effective option.
When you need a wheelchair van, you have many options to choose from, and the cost varies a great deal. You can find plenty of information online. Do some research and check with local dealers as well. You may decide that a wheelchair van conversion is the best way to fit your needs.
