Mouth blisters (aphthous stomatitis) are small sores, which appear in the mouth.
They appear on the oral mucosa and are painful. The mouth blister is round, oval
or polygonal surface erosion or sore, usually with the size of a lentil seed.
The central part of the mouth blister is covered with tissue with
white-yellowish color and its periphery is bright red. Blisters develop
themselves and are either on the level of the mucosa or are slightly concave.
The number of the blisters that can be seen is usually not more than 3-4. The
evolution of a blister lasts about 6-7 days and after that it disappears without
leaving a scar. The total duration of the disease, however, is longer because
some blisters appear and others disappear.
The unpleasant mouth blisters
are usually located in the lining of the cheeks, lips, on the lower surface and
edges of the tongue. They hurt a lot when you touch them while eating,
especially solid food (due to the mechanical irritation) or food with high
acidity (chemical irritation). Mouth blisters appear at all ages and both
genders. It is believed that the most common cause of mouth blisters is a virus
called Herpes simplex labialis. In addition some immunodeficiency diseases and
lack of vitamin B and C in the body can also cause aphthous stomatitis in the
oral cavity. It can also be caused by: stress, fatigue, biting, poor dental
prosthesis, rough toothbrush, use of contaminated products, poor oral hygiene.
That抯 why you should pay special attention to the hygiene of your
mouth.
It is very important to prevent mouth blisters from turning into
chronic because then their treatment will be difficult and long. You should
consider what is the cause for the occurrence of blisters and then to visit your
dentist or GP. There are many anti-inflammatory agents with local effect which
suppress the symptoms and temporary remove the blisters but they do not remove
the cause of their occurrence.
You should maintain a very good oral
hygiene if you do not want to have mouth blisters. All you need is just not to
forget to brush your teeth at least twice a day-in the morning and before
bedtime. Change your toothbrush at least once every three months. You should ask
your dentist which toothbrush and toothpaste are most appropriate for you. If
you have mouth blisters, you should use soft toothbrush because the hard one can
damage the mouth tissues. Do not forget to use dental floss - it removes the
food residues in the interdental space. If you have mouth water you can rinse
your mouth with it. You should reduce the amount of coffee and cigarettes. Avoid
eating salty and spicy foods; eat products rich in vitamins-C, B1 and B12.
